American Airlines flight from New Delhi to New York JFK declared an emergency and diverted to London.

American Airlines flight #AA293 departed New Delhi Saturday, July 20 2024 at 00:10 IST (scheduled at 23:30) from DEL Airport for a 16-hour flight to New York City.

The Boeing 777-300ER (registration N719AN) was into Norwegian airspace, cruising at 36,000 ft when the crew declared an emergency.

After 9 hours into the flight, the aircraft turned left toward Scotland and finally diverted to London, 1 hour and 20 minutes later.

The choice of London Heathrow was probably due to a technical issue, with the airline having maintenance facilities and more options to resume the flight.

The 11 year-old aircraft will be replaced by another Boeing 777-300ER (registration N729AN) which arrived in London at 08:30 BST this morning from Dallas-Fort Worth.

Flight #AA293 is resuming from 11:20 BST, landing is expected at 02:10 pm at New York JFK Airport.

Few days ago, the exact same situation occurred on Sunday, July 14 2024. The flight #AA293 declared an emergency between Norway and Scotland and diverted to London Heathrow due to a medical emergency.

The flight was performed by the Boeing 777-300ER (registration N723AN) which resumed the flight few hours later to JFK.
