An Amazon Prime Air Boeing 767 went off the end of Runway 08L in Vancouver.

The north runway at Vancouver International Airport in British Columbia is likely to be closed for 48 hours after a Boeing 767 freighter operated by Cargojet on behalf of Amazon Air overran the north runway during landing early Tuesday morning, the airport reported at 9:30 a.m. PST.

The airport authority, in a previous notice posted on its website, said the cargo jet skidded off the runway at about 1:45 a.m. local time. Fire and rescue teams responded to the incident. There were no injuries to the three crew members, the airport said on X.

The Boeing 767-338ER freighter (registration C-GAZI) performed a fast landing due to a problem with the aircraft’s flaps.

“Details of the aircraft condition are being assessed, and the senior executive team is closely monitoring developments to effectively manage the situation,” Cargojet said in a statement to FreightWaves. “Further details will be made available as more information is confirmed.”

On November 17th, Jeffrey Bruce “Jeff Skiles” officially retired from American Airlines.

Jeff Skiles is a pilot who has spent the last 30 years with US Airways and was a key component in the successful crash landing known as the “Miracle on the Hudson”.

Serving as the first officer on a flight from New York LaGuardia alongside Captain Chesley Sullenberger in 2009, Skiles assisted in landing the engine-damaged aircraft on the Hudson River, saving everyone onboard.

Skiles’ lifetime of experiences contributed to this astounding outcome and attributes the result to crisis management training and intense preparation.

His last flight was on a 787-9 Dreamliner operating as #AA87 from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) ORD.

Apparently, he had to buy a ticket for his wife to join him on the flight. There was also no water salute or a reception at the gate.

Norse Atlantic Airways has successfully completed its second charter flight to at Troll Airfield in Antarctica for the purpose of scientific research on the continent.

On November 15, 2024, at 10:55 local time, Norse Atlantic’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner, registered as LN-FNC, and named “Everglades”, successfully touched down, carrying 10,5 tons of research equipment and scientists for the Norwegian Polar Institute and Aircontact.

The journey followed the Oslo-Cape Town-Troll Airfield-Cape Town-Oslo route similar the airline’s historic first landing last year, including a stop in Cape Town, South Africa, before the final Antarctic leg.

Norse Atlantic is set to complete a total of four charters to Antarctica dedicated to support scientific research. This accomplishment reflects the airline’s growing reputation of operational excellence, demonstrated by the expertise of its highly trained pilots and crew and its state-of-the-art Boeing aircraft.

The Dreamliner, uniquely suited for long-distance flights, is renowned for its fuel efficiency, enabling it to complete a round trip from Cape Town to Antarctica without refueling—delivering both cost and environmental benefits. Its large cargo hold allowed for the secure transport of significant volumes of research equipment vital to operations at remote scientific research stations.

Troll Airfield is an airstrip located 6.8 kilometres from the research station Troll in Princess Martha Coast in Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. Owned and operated by the Norwegian Polar Institute, it consists of a 3,300-by-100-metre runway on glacial blue ice on the Antarctic ice sheet.

Spirit is filing for bankruptcy after years of quarterly losses and mounting debt.

The ultra-low-cost airline announced plans to begin the Chapter 11 process early Monday morning.

The carrier early Monday said it reached a prearranged deal with its bondholders including $300 million in debtor-in-possession financing to help it through the bankruptcy, which it expects to exit in the first quarter of next year. It said vendors and aircraft lessors will not be impaired. Spirit listed its assets and liabilities between $1 billion and $10 billion, in a court filing.

The airline said it expects to continue operating and said customers can book tickets.

“The most important thing to know is that you can continue to book and fly now and in the future,” Spirit CEO Ted Christie said in a letter to customers on Monday. He said customers can use tickets, credits and loyalty points normally.

Spirit is the first major U.S. airline to file for Chapter 11 since American Airlines 13 years ago.

During four days, ground workers tried to capture 132 hamsters hamsters escaped from the boxes in the cargo hold of a TAP A320.

A TAP plane has been held at Ponta Delgada Airport in the Azores since Tuesday after 132 hamsters escaped from the boxes in which they were being transported and were left loose in the hold.

Airport workers have been trying to recapture all of the animals for four days, which prevented the aircraft from returning to Lisbon for safety reasons.

On Saturday, 16 of these rodents, small but capable of destroying electrical cables, were still loose inside the Airbus 321.

The plane left Lisbon bound for Ponta Delgada with passengers and their luggage, as well as a package for a pet shop: more than a hundred hamsters, ferrets and also some birds. But when they landed, the baggage collection teams noticed that the boxes were damaged and the rodents were loose.

Airline sources say that the same order had been prevented from boarding another flight, as the transport boxes were not in compliance, but were accepted on the next flight.

The aircraft finally returned to Lisbon Sunday, November 17 2024.

A tool used to turn an engine compressor during borescope inspections has been left inside and was found a month later.

On 6 December 2023, an Airbus A380-842 aircraft, registered VH‑OQI and operated by Qantas Airways Limited, was undergoing a 3-day scheduled maintenance check at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), United States.

On day one of the maintenance check, during a scheduled borescope inspection of the outboard left engine, a tool was left in the engine inlet. On the evening of 8 December, the aircraft was released to service and departed for Melbourne, Victoria.

On 1 January 2024, the aircraft returned to the LAX maintenance facility for a 3-day scheduled maintenance check, where the missing tool was discovered in the outboard left engine low‑pressure compressor. The aircraft had flown 34 cycles totalling 293.74 hours with the tool in the outboard left engine.

What the ATSB found

The ATSB found that the tool was not located during the end of task foreign object inspections, which resulted in it remaining in the engine. The Qantas Engineering lost tool procedure was not commenced prior to the aircraft being released to service and the certifying engineer did not follow up on the lost tool, prior to releasing the aircraft to service.

What has been done as a result

On 2 January 2024, a Qantas Engineering internal incident report was raised with an immediate action to brief staff on the importance of ensuring that all tooling is returned and actioned by tool store personnel. A Qantas Engineering internal investigation was completed and on 4 March 2024, the executive manager for Qantas Engineering released an internal safety directive for immediate action requiring all Qantas Engineering employees to meet the company tooling control requirements without exception.

Poland said it had scrambled fighter jets in response to a “massive” Russian missile attack on Ukraine.

Overnight, Russian forces deployed strategic Tu-95 bombers, with reports indicating up to 17 aircraft. Additionally, ships armed with a significant stockpile of Kalibr missiles were positioned at sea.

Around 6:00 AM, missile launches were observed from strategic aviation, Crimea, and the Black Sea.

Subsequently, loud explosions were reported in Kyiv. A residential building in one of the city’s central districts caught fire, resulting in injuries.

In response to Russia’s large-scale missile strikes on Ukrainian territory, the military command of the Republic of Poland deployed both domestic and allied aircraft, according to the Operational Command of the Polish Army on social media platform X.

Due to Russia’s large-scale missile assault, involving strikes with cruise and ballistic missiles as well as drones on targets, including those in western Ukraine, Poland and its allies have launched an aviation operation within Polish airspace.

According to the report, “In line with existing procedures, the Operational Commander of the Armed Forces Group (AFG) has activated all available resources under their command. Fighter jets have been scrambled, while ground-based air defense and radar systems have been placed on the highest state of alert.”

The plane sustained damage after the bullet struck on the right side of the nose area, “near the cockpit”.

The Dallas Police Department confirmed that officers responded to a shooting call just before 10 p.m. at Dallas Love Field Airport.

The runway was temporarily closed while police carried out their investigation, but has since reopened.

A spokesperson for Southwest said: Flight 2494 taxied safely back to the terminal at Dallas Love Field after a bullet apparently struck the right side of the aircraft just under the flight deck while the crew was preparing to depart for Indianapolis.

British Airways’ fleet of 12 Airbus A380s has been experiencing a series of technical incidents in recent weeks.

The latest incident, on November 6, the A380 performing flight BA207, registered G-XLEC, took off from London-Heathrow for Miami at 11:24 a.m., instead of the initial scheduled time of 9:50 a.m.

About four minutes after the start of the flight, the superjumbo turned south, towards the Channel to probably dump fuel, before beginning its return to its point of departure.

The A380 G-XLEC in question, which was returned to service in June 2022, is not at its first fault. It had already had to be placed in maintenance on October 13 and 31, and on November 2, leading to the cancellation of flights scheduled with this aircraft.

In early October, another A380 returned from two and a half months of maintenance only to be taken out of service again the next day, after having only made two flights.

On October 26th, British Airways A380 G-XLEA was grounded after it dumped fuel and returned to Dallas-Fort Worth. The Flight BA192 experienced hydraulic issue.

According to FlightRadar24: “between July 1 and September 18, 2024, 3.94% of all British Airways A380 flights were cancelled or transferred to another aircraft .” That’s nearly one in 25 A380 flights.

The cause of these numerous incidents could be the prolonged storage of A380s during the Covid pandemic in Châteauroux in France, a place too humid compared to aircraft storage parks in Spain or the United States, according to Head for Points.
