First-time flyer deploys slides after mistakenly opening emergency door instead of bathroom

On 4th July, chaos erupted on an Air China flight when a passenger mistook an emergency exit for the airplane’s lavatory.

The incident, which occurred around 8:45 pm on board CA2754 scheduled to depart Quzhou Airport for Chengdu, resulted in the deployment of the aircraft’s emergency slide and the cancellation of the flight.

According to police reports, the passenger, a first-time flyer, mistakenly opened the emergency exit door believing it to be the restroom. This action unintentionally deployed the aircraft’s emergency slide, forcing the flight’s cancellation.

This occurrence underscores the need for clear and thorough passenger education on aircraft, particularly for those unfamiliar with standard aircraft procedures. Understanding the location and proper use of lavatories, emergency exits, and other onboard features is crucial for ensuring flight safety and smooth operation.

Airlines typically provide safety briefings before takeoff, outlining these procedures. However, this incident suggests that additional measures, such as clearer signage or in-flight announcements specifically aimed at first-time flyers, could be beneficial in preventing similar occurrences in the future.
