Iceland based startup Niceair cancels flights and suspends operations

Niceair (HFM) suspended all operations and cancelled all flights starting today.

Þorvaldur Lúðvík Sigurjónsson, the Managing Director (MD) of Niceair, told mbl.is.The company has not yet decided whether its staff will be laid off.

Unfortunately, due to the foreign operator of the airline, HiFly defaulted to the airline’s owner and lost its only aircraft. Niceair is forced to cancel all its flights and suspend its operations.

Executive Thoughts

He mentions that they cannot sell tickets until they secure an airplane. Furthermore, they have been actively searching for one day and night recently. The spokesperson remains optimistic that a solution will be found before the summer.

The situation has made it inconceivable for the airline to fulfill its commitments to its passengers. However, the company had good results in the past year, a strong booking position, and good prospects for the future. It is now in a place that prevents it from providing the planned services.

“In light of the progress made and the positive outlook, as well as the successful completion of a financing round to support ongoing operations, it is unfortunate that the outcome for the company has been disappointing. Since June of last year, the company has been operating regularly scheduled flights between North Iceland and Copenhagen and Tenerife, achieving a 71% capacity rate,” said MD.

He added, ” Since we began operating this service, we have established its significance and found that the local market has exceeded our expectations in terms of strength and efficiency. Weather-related disruptions have been rare, with anomalies occurring in only 2% of our flights.”

During the winter season, the Akureyri airport did not pose any issues, and flights were safely operated despite challenging weather conditions. The MD, Sigurjónsson, expresses his regret over the unfortunate outcome for everyone involved and apologizes for any inconvenience caused to customers.

Unfortunate Fate

Earlier today, Virgin Atlantic announced that it would suspend services between London Heathrow, Lahore, and Islamabad.

Some airlines, Flybe, Flynr, and Viva Air (Colombia), have suspended their operations this year. At the same time, some airlines have flagged off their maiden flights.

The Niceair suspension of operations came to be a shock. As post-pandemic many airlines are recovering and adding capacity. Some even placed historical orders to expand their network.
